Paninis and Bikinis has become a West End staple, and with its ever-growing popularity, owner Jason Schatzberg has an expansion in the works.”The community is really, really excited,” said Schatzberg of the upcoming construction.The deli and coffee shop opened six years ago, at the corner of West Beech Street and Wyoming Avenue, and Schatzberg said he it has grown from day one. Now that a vacancies next door are available, he’s taking the initial steps in his plan to create a restaurant area. With the larger space will come about twenty additional employees, and Schatzberg plans to share some of the additional income he expects to generate with the community.

“I don’t care what I make,” Schatzberg said. “It’s what you give back to the community that counts.”One of his main goals with Paninis and Bikinis has always been to keep the shop aesthetically pleasing. When the restaurant opened with a renovated storefront, Schatzberg said he noticed that this inspired neighboring establishments. New stores started to flourish and older ones began to remodel.Through Paninis and Bikinis, Schatzberg hopes to bring positive attention and developments to the West End, which is home to some of the “country’s most beautiful beaches,” he said. He believes a well-kept and friendly store like his generates pride in the community and its businesses.

“Hopefully the city sees how I keep [Paninis and Bikinis] and it raises awareness about the remodeling that is needed on the West End,” Schatzberg noted.With a background in the food industry, Schatzberg knows what will generate business and keep customers coming back for more. A Staten Island native,Water Pumps News, Schtazberg worked in casual dining for most of his life and decided to move to Long Beach to open what was once Long Beach Coffee & Tea. They’re saying, “We’re not recycling and you can’t make us.” Anything that would give a revenue-producing business the slightest hiccup was not for discussion.

Preferring to get their own house in order before approaching residents and businesses, the city has already taken some incremental steps to lower the use of energy. Nearly 300 city streetlights were quietly converted to run on energy-efficient LED bulbs this past month, according to Matt Huffaker, the city’s key sustainability guy who is officially known as the Public Services business manager.

“This saves a lot of kilowatt hours,” explained Walnut Creek Mayor Cindy Silva. “And it requires fewer light bulb changes, which means fewer trucks and less risk.”

Another energy-saving measure to show the city is doing its share will be solar panels installed on top of City Hall starting next month.

Using 2005 as a baseline, the city and its consulting team mapped out some possible strategies for trying to meet the state’s goal. One challenge will be that,high risk merchant account, by 2020, growth expected in the city will drive up energy use by an additional 20 percent, overwhelming the planned 15 percent reduction.

A daunting pie chart showed that at present 643,596 metric tons of pollution comes from transportation; that’s 59 percent of the totaland much of it comes from highways like 24 and 680 that are beyond the city’s control.

With Gaga publically proclaiming she “refuses to wear anything but Versace for the next several months,” it’s possible Donatella could nab the design job, but the list of predicted materials might rule her out – we can’t see Versace coming up with anything involving balloons, flowers or glass.
